These apps are designed to comply with prison regulations and allow family members as well as friends to send and receive messages and photos, eCards, video calls, and money into their trust accounts in prison. In addition to these messaging apps, there are also many federal inmate applications that provide additional services such as video visitation and phone calls.
JPay, for example allows family and friends to transfer money directly into an inmate's trust account as well as emails, photos, videograms, and electronic cards. You can also design personalized postcards using their own images. It's a safer and more secure alternative to postal mail.
Another popular inmate text application is GettingOut, which offers "simple and reliable communication" between inmates and their loved family members. The app, available in certain correctional facilities, allows inmates to upload images as well as text their family members and friends using their tablets. It costs inmates $0.25 a message and loved ones pay for the data that they use to view their messages (but not for explicit images). The GettingOut app allows users to upload a picture to Facebook or Foursquare and then check in to Foursquare and even add the option of a YouTube video.
